This executive order directs the closure of the Department of Education and the return of authority over education to states and local communities. Citing the Department’s inefficiency and failure to improve student outcomes despite substantial federal funding, the order argues that education policy should be determined at the state level. It highlights declining national test scores, the Department’s mismanagement of federal student aid, and its entrenchment of bureaucracy as justification for its dissolution. The Secretary of Education is instructed to facilitate this transition while maintaining essential services and ensuring federal funds comply with laws prohibiting programs labeled as “diversity, equity, and inclusion” or gender ideology initiatives.
